Where the Wild Things Are

images Where the Wild Things AreI wrote out a very lovely post about the book Where The Wild Things Are but it got deleted so I’m just gonna ramble on for a few.
I love books. I loved books growing up, I was a bit of a hermit and books were a way to explore the world without actually leaving my house. I’ve always hoped to pass that love of books onto my daughter and was getting a little worried when she didn’t became an instant fan at the age of 1 but I am happy to tell you that Where the Wild Things are has ignited her passion. We bought it a couple of weeks ago and have read it at least 3 times a day ever since. She already knows most of the words and I just love the way she pronounces “Tewible” so cute.
My Evangeline is a Wild Thing at heart and I love how this book lets her explore that Wild side of her but at the same time teaching her that there is a time to put it away. My favorite line
“After a while Max wanted to be where someone loved him best of all.”
Eva’s favorite line is
“They gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws.”
I remember when my 3rd grade teacher read us this book in class. I never had the book at home but just hearing it that one day in class had left a lasting impression on me.
I fell in love with Maurice Sendak when I heard that he said he would tell parents to “go to hell” in an interview when asked “What do you say to parents who think the Wild Things film may be too scary?” I also love how he says “We don’t want children to suffer. But what do we do about the fact that they do? The trick is to turn that into art. Not scare children, that’s never our intention.”
With that being said Eva has not seen the movie yet because I do want to see it first, mainly because I don’t want her to have nightmares and she is still only 2 after all.

What are some of your favorite childhood books that you have been able to pass on to your children?

The Princess and the Frog….

…and the shining star that stole my heart.

Disney has done it again.

Not only were there frogs falling in love, adorable little girls, strong-women, amazing fathers, singing fireflies, and a backdrop of New Orleans….

THERE IS A CHARACTER IN THE MOVIE WITH THE NAME EVANGELINE!

Not JUST a character, a shining star.

Did I ever tell you my daughters name is Evangeline?  Eva is just her nickname.

So we are sitting there in the theater on opening night of the latest Disney princess movie with our little princess and there is a character with her name.  There is even a beautiful song with her name in it…”Look how she lights up the sky, Ma Belle Evangeline.”

For those of you that don’t know, Evangeline is the name of a poem written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.  It is a very lengthy poem, more of a book really.  In the poem Evangeline and Gabriel fall in love but through a series of harrowing events are separated.  They spend the rest of their lives trying to find each other again.  They both end up finally meeting again in New Orleans but they are old and dying.  They die in each others arms and are buried next to each other to be together forever in eternity. “Still stands the forest primeval; but far away from its shadow.  Side by side in their nameless graves , the lovers are sleeping.”

Nobody knows for sure if the story is actually true, it was a tale past down through generations, but the name Evangeline was the creation of Longfellow.

Apparently the story of Evangeline and her lover is an important one in New Orleans culture.  There are statues of her, restaurants named after her, a parish and even a race track.  Which is evidently why it made it’s way into this movie about New Orleans.  I knew I was going to love this movie but now it really has a place in my heart.

-I should add that I had no idea the poem even existed when we named Evangeline.  The day I told my mom what we planned to name her she wandered into a used book store and saw the poem.

The Miche Bag – Review and Giveaway!

The Miche Bag

Okay ladies this is by far the coolest product I’ve gotten to review so far.

Ever annoyed by having to change out your purse when it doesn’t match your outfit or the occasion?

Michelle Romero, founder of Miche Bags, came up with the incredible idea of changing the outside, or shell, of your purse instead of going through the annoying process of having to change out the whole thing.

The way it works is you buy the bag itself which is a plain black bag.  Then, the exciting part, you pick out some shells that fit your style.  The website has so many amazing shells.  Cute, stylish, classy.  It’s all there.  Or you can also buy them at a local retailer, just do a search on the website.

When you want a different look all you do is snap on the shell to the outside of the purse.  There are magnets built in to keep it in place.   I found that the purse has plenty of pockets so I can keep all of my things organized.

Everybody that has seen my purse has loved it and wants one of their own.  They make great gifts too!

My favorites are…

the Eva, of course.

Why is My Mother Getting a Tattoo? – Book Review

newtattoocover thumb Why is My Mother Getting a Tattoo? – Book Review A few years ago, before I was a mom, I asked my dad if I would feel more like a grown up once children came along.  My 62 year old father of 8 children and 14 grandkids replied “No, you’ll always feel like a kid, I still do.”

This conversation is why I read the book Why Is My Mother Getting a Tattoo?: And Other Questions I Wish I Never Had to Ask Why is My Mother Getting a Tattoo? – Book Review.  To quote the back cover “Despite her forty years and a successful career as a rock journalist, Jancee Dunn still feels like a teenager, especially around her parents and sisters.”  It’s a hilarious, light read about crazy families you just can’t help but love anyway.  I mean really, how many of us would get through the holiday’s without being able to laugh at the craziness around us?  It is the perfect book to read for a day at the beach.

Jancee mainly writes about her nosy, highly opinionated, overbearing siblings and parents.  I could relate to a lot of it.  No offense Mom.

Think “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” meets “The Bronx Beat”.

My favorite parts are when her and her husband have a discussion that has changed my views on Tip Jars forever.  “Why stop at coffee shop employees? Why not tip the gas station attendant or the UPS man?”  Or the affection she develops for a high tech toilet she got to use at her hotel room in Japan.  “Sometimes I would rush to beat the automatic lid.  It always won”

So how about you.  Any light summer reads you can suggest for me?

Fantastical Friday – Eva is Joining the Circus

Okay obviously I’m just kidding but seriously after last night I think she would in a heartbeat.  This was my first time ever going to the Circus and it was AMAZING.  Eva was enthralled throughout the entire show.  It had all of her favorite things: beautiful Horses, Zebras, Elephants, Tigers, fun music, dancers, and acrobats.  The entire thing was just filled with excitement.  I don’t think she blinked once.

I would have to say her favorite part was probably the Elephants.  The whole way there she kept saying she wanted to see Dumbo.   She was not disappointed.

My favorite part was the human cannonball duo.  Amazing to be able to fly through the air like that.  Just amazing.

This might sound silly but something about Circus performers has just always fascinated me.  I sat there wondering what each of there stories where.  Did they grow up in the circus?  Did they from a long line of clowns, animal trainers, and acrobats?  I was so interested to read their bios in the program and to learn that many of them are from other countries.  That just made them even more cooler.  I started imagining joining the circus and touring Europe.

The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Zing Zang Zoom Circus is in Phoenix until 06/28 this Sunday.  If you can go I highly highly highly recommend that you do.   Really, especially if you have young kids.  Eva had so much fun I almost want to go again this weekend.

You can get your Tickets at TicketMaster.

Saturday June 27th 11:00 a.m., 3:00 p.m., 7:00p.m.

Sunday June 28th 1:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m.

On a more somber note.  RIP Michael Jackson.  His music was a part of my childhood and so many others for the past 40 years.  I know there is a lot to be wondered about in how he led his life but he was a musical genius and well there have been many geniuses who have lead strange lives.
