Proud to be an American…

What can I say.  I am so incredibly proud to live in this country today.  My faith has been restored in the American people that we have truly come full circle.  It is not just that Barrack Obama, the next president of the United States, is African American.  It is that he is an educated, charismatic, brilliant African American man who will be the first to hold the highest office in this land.  We have finally broken the cycle and opened the door to all people who are capable to serve.  I am confident that my daughter will one day soon be able to see a woman hold that office.  For that I am beaming with pride.  For my daughter, my nieces, and my nephews to be able to imagine that someone that anyone no matter their color or sex can indeed succeed to the leader of the free world with overwhelming support from the citizens of this country.

For those that voted for John McCain, I am sorry that your candidate didn’t win.  I was incredibly moved by the speech he gave last night.  He truly is an American hero and proved that he has a lot of class.

I introduce to you the new first family!

The only thing I’m afraid of is people like this…

This would probably be a good post to tell you about the lovely lady I met on the plane a couple of weeks ago. I sat next to a very nice elderly couple who were very helpful and friendly. They played with Eva, gave me free parenting and marriage advice, talked about their family and how they just celebrated 47 years of marriage. We were having a nice little visit when all of a sudden the woman asks me what I think about Sarah Palin. Me, trying to be overly-polite, respond that I like her as a person but not as a vice president. She then starts in on how Sarah Palin is the greatest woman that ever lived and that Barrack Obama is no good. I immediately inform her that I am “a big Obama supporter.” This doesn’t stop her, she adds that he is Muslim and a terrorist and that “this country was formed on christian values” and that Muslim values just don’t jive with that.

Watching the debates as a family

mccain 300x227 Watching the debates as a familyI have had a great time this past year following the election and learning about the candidates. Even though Eva is too young to understand what is going on I have loved watching the debates and conventions with her and my husband. Four years from now she will be 5 and will have a little bit more of an awareness. I plan to carry on this tradition in order to teach her how important voting is and being educated on the issues.
If you have missed any of the debates I urge you to watch them here.

Hopefully she will be inspired to run for political office herself one day.  I read this blogpost today and was sad to learn that my daughter will not be able to be president if she wanted to.  I thought there was some clause that made it possible for internationally adopted children but apperently not.

Lehman brothers, AIG, and now Washington Mutual

This has been a disastrous week. I have the same feeling of doom that I had the week of 9/11/2001 only without the loss of life. There is so much information out there right now that I don’t have time to really read it all and get a good understanding of what is going on. All I know is that CEO’s where greedy and instead of trying to derail this impending disaster that they surely saw coming they decided to get all they could out of the American people before taking there millions of dollars in payouts and hitting the road.
Now the government wants to spend $700 billion dollars to bail the company’s out. What happened to the old American tradition of pulling yourself up by your bootstraps? All I ask is: if it is good for the poor and underprivileged children of America why isn’t it good for wall street?

Why I refuse to vote for someone based on abortion…

Okay, I know, abortion is a hot topic and I don’t really want to get into all that here. I just want to talk about my reasons for refusing to vote for someone based on their views on abortion.

  1. Abortion is legal. The supreme court ruled that it is legal and that is what it has been for over 30 years. No matter what my beliefs on the issue are, in our law books, it is legal.
  2. No president since Roe V. Wade has been able to make abortion illegal.

  3. Both parties have turned it into a game to garner more votes. If you are pro-life you must vote for a Republican, and if you are pro-choice you have to vote for the Democrat. They have essential narrowed every election down to this ONE issue. I refuse to play that game.

There was a time where I based all my voting decisions on what the candidate’s stance on abortion was. Well, that got me nowhere. So, this time I am voting based on the million other issues that matter. Like our national security, emergency preparedness and aide, health care, our collapsing economy, and education.
