Potty Time Tuesday

After a week of potty training we are making some progress. Last Thursday we came home from the store and she immediately grabbed her little potty and asked me to help her take off her pants. When I did she sat down and went pee.
Then, on Friday we were at the mall and went into the family restroom I asked her if she needed to go potty she said yes and she did!
Yesterday I started to notice that she is getting better about controlling when she pees. I know this because her panties are staying dry and when she sits on the toilet she will only let a little bit go and then stop. So I have to sit there with her and encourage her to stay on the toilet until she is completely done. Otherwise she tends to stand up right away after only going a tiny bit.
One other thing we did was buy her some pull ups for when we have to leave the house and for bedtime. When I opened the package she said “Diaper” but I immediately corrected her and said “No, these are not diapers they are panties with princesses on them! We need to keep these dry just like our other panties.”
As long as I am seeing progress and as long as it stays a positive thing I will continue with what we have been doing. The way I see you can go about potty training two ways. You can wait until your child is completely ready to go independently on their own or you can take the initiative and help them learn how to do it. Of course if they cannot physically control themselves then it is not possible to train them and if you do not have the patience for it then it can be very damaging and prolong potty training for a long long time. Either way you choose they will eventually learn.
Oh and I learned yesterday that pull ups don’t hold in diarrhea so well. Just thought I’d let you know.

Tinkerbell – The Movie

Ever since we went to Disneyland a couple of weeks ago Eva has been obsessed with Tinkerbell. We watched the fireworks and she was enthralled when Tinkerbell flew behind the castle and spread her pixie dust. We rented the movie as a special weekend treat and she LOVED it! I think we will be needing a Tinkerbell costume this Halloween!

Play the Fool.
We could all learn a little something from Elmo’s friend Mr. Noodle. He is an adult who needs a lot of help from little kids to figure out how to do everyday things. This helplessness gives kids confidence because they feel really smart when they know more than an adult! For example, when trying to wash his hands he would do something like put his elbows in, then splash water on his face, or put his foot in the sink. Every time he does it wrong the little kids tell him the right way to do it until he finally gets it.
Find little ways to do this with your child everyday. Like forget how to put his shirt on in the morning. Or how to brush your/her teeth. How about what kind of utensil she needs to eat her cereal with? I’m sure there are a million things you can think of to “play the fool”.

*By the way this idea came from the Dr. Harvey Karp book The Happiest Toddler on the Block Mommy Tip of the Day #17. He also has a DVD Mommy Tip of the Day #17 for all you visual learners.

110208 017c1 269x300 Mommy Tip of the Day #16Have a picnic!

It’s springtime and the weather here in Arizona is perfect.  I am extremely lucky to live right across the street from a big park.  I literally walk out my front door cross the street and find myself in the middle of a large sports field with a small playground a short walk away.

Yesterday DD and I packed up some snacks, a blanket, bubbles, a spray bottle of water, a bucket of water, and some paint brushes.  We had a delightful time sitting on our blanket eating strawberries and cheese and afterward we had even more bonding time while we played.  Nature really is the best classroom.  I talked to her about the world around us, she worked on her hand/eye coordination by blowing bubbles, and using the spray bottle to “clean the tree”, we did math by counting our fingers and toes, and she learned the names of new body parts like ankles and elbows.  The best part was we were steps away from our front door so we could get as messy as we wanted and not worry about having to drive or walk home.
I wish I had brought my camera because it was really a special day.  (This picture was taken last November.)
