Little E’s favorite movie is Hairspray. Does this make me a bad mom? The original was one of my favorite movies as a teenager but come one she is only 2! She just loves all the dancing and singing but it’s getting to the point where I think I might have to put it up for a while until she is at an age where I can better explain all the racial stuff. You know like when the song says “Nice white kids lead the way and once a month we have NEGRO day! ” Ya I think she needs to be a little bit older to understand the concept of the movie before I can be letting her watch that all the time.
I am glad this is one of her favorites though because I love it too. Seeing John Travolta and Christopher Walken dance around on their balcony is just too funny. Plus my favorite movie quote ever is when Queen Latifah tells her son to “Be prepared for a whole lotta ugly comin’ at you from a never ending parade of stupid.”

‘Aint that the truth.

Love that quote. I honestly have to say I haven’t seen Hairspray yet. I heard it’s a fantastic movie. It’s in my movie queue at Netflix. I’m still waiting for it. Thanks for sharing and stopping by my place.

Oh, let her watch Hairspray. The musical movie version is so watered down from the orginal. And it’s a good lesson that everyone should be treated the same no matter what your skin color or even if you’re a guy in a padded dress.

Think of it this way there are a worse John Waters movies that your 2 year old could call her favorite, say Female Trouble. Then I’d worry!

If you let her get her fill of it now (before she’s old enough to understand the racial connotations) you can put it up for a few years when she hits school age maybe.

I was pretty strict on BabyBoy’s viewing habits, but once I let him watch (are you ready for this?) Backdraft. He was 2! He loved the scenes with the fire, I fastforwarded through the one brief sex scene and the one dead body and, HEY, no sweat.

Until he walked around the house for hours saying, “Effing fireman, effing firetruck, effing firehouse.” And yes, he filled in the correct word.

We all do stupid stuff with our kids, Hairspray ain’t bad at all.

This really gets me motivated to see this movie. I can’t believe I still haven’t seen it. It feels like everyone in the whole world has seen it but me. I have to say that quote is hilarious! And I love Queen L.
