Why do I always get sucked into black Friday???  Every year I say I am not going.  Then I look at the ads Thanksgiving day and I say “Look at all these great deals, I can do this!”  After waking up AT 4:30 a.m., showing up, realizing that everyone who said they would meet me is still sleeping in their warm bed, figuring out that everything I wanted in the add is already gone, picking up some other junk I never wanted in the first place, waiting in line for 2 hours to save spend a little bit of money, and after ALL this I promise myself “I am NOT doing this next year!”  Then, a year later the cycle starts all over again.

Tell me.  Will it ever stop?  Is there some kind of 12 step group for torturing yourself this way even if it is only once a year?

If I hear about any more killings it may motivate me to quit going out of self preservation.

There is a way to, not stop, but slow black friday shopping: Work in retail if only for that one day. I work for walmart and I was there at 4:30 am yesterday. I had to act as security when my manager had to break he news to this crowd of hundreds of people that we didn’t get shipped all the tv or even enough of the tvs we did get that were advertised. Upon opening the doors, seeing a massive sea of people rushing towards you ready to knock you over and trampled you is enough to lose the thrill of consumerism. Heck, in Long island, a walmart employee was trampled to death over the sales…

i like shopping: I love money saving shopping, yet seeing people charge at you for the best deal like a rabid animal hunting its next meal, all be damned in it’s way is enough to scare black friday out of you for even a few hours.

Ended up getting some $2 movies later in the morning. :D

    Have a great day!

I did the same thing this year…but it was actually worth it for me. I woke up at 4:30 to go to Staples to get the 19″ flat panel monitor. That was it…I was back home and back in bed at 6:30!

I stopped BlackFriday shopping about 10 years ago. My son wanted a bike for Christmas, WalMart had them for $25! Nice bike too. By the time I reached the bike section, they were gone. I did manage to get him some nice board games for $3 each or something, but I haven’t been BlackFriday shopping since then.

Wow, you have a lot of willpower. I guess if I tried to not look at the ads that would help. But curiosity always gets the best of me. :-)

The answer my friend, is lying in the first line of your post: ‘Then I look at the ads.’

The reason you get sucked in every yearn is because you look at the ads! And what do ads do? They make beautiful promises! That’s what they’re there for. To awaken a burning need to buy the things they promise.

So for next year make big poster and write on it: ‘Step away from the ads!’

I repeat: STEP AWAY FROM THE ADS!

And now I’m off to make one for me…
